Kaohsiung Free Trade Port Area

On January 1st of 2005, the Free Trade Port Area of Kaohsiung City was officially put into operation. This area provides convenience for personnel, products, finance and technology, allowing as it does such benefits as tax reduction. This will entice more businesses, enhance the development of the port and extend different business opportunities. Currently, the world has about 600 different types of free trade areas.
The purpose of the government in establishing the Kaohsiung Free Trade Port Area is to consolidate the cargo businesses and expand the international logistics to strengthen the functions of the sea transport transmission center. After the operation of the Kaohsiung Free Trade Port Area, the city will benefit in different ways, covering tourism, production, logistics, finance and management of the port. This will elevate the status of Kaohsiung City for it to become the mainstay of Southern Taiwan, causing it to be an international free trade port city.
In Asia, some countries have established free trade ports such as in Singapore, Japan, Korea, Mainland China, etc.
The purpose of these establishments is to use such resources as manpower, efficiently, and to manage the global in order to facilitate efficient and effective business management. In order to prevent Taiwan from facing the threat of being marginalized, the Executive Yuan, has planned to establish the "free trade port area". In this controlled district, goods are able to be arranged, stored, dismantled, repackaged, tagged, and categorized for later export transportation.
After Executive Yuan passed the establishment of this initial Kaohsiung Free Trade Port Area, many business have already signed the willingness proposal to join this free port area. The Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau has announced the success of the public bidding for the construction and management of Kaohsiung's Cargo Center, which was achieved by the Yang Ming Marine Transportation Cooperation. This is the frist public bidding case to be completed since the establishment of the Kaohsing Free Trade Port; the total invested amount is about NT$ 2.2 billion and construction is expected to be finished in two years times.
The Korea Business Ship Cooperation looks forward to the future potential of the Kaohsiung Port and has already signed a five year contract with the Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau to renew the rent for the right to use pier 75 of the fifth cargo center, thus making Kaohsiung Port the most central in Asia.
Kaohsiung Free Trade Port has five cargo- transit centers. The total area is about 398 hectares. The Free Trade Port forms the delivery point for Taiwanese businessmen's final products, half-finished products and parts. The operation of the free trade port area will create a model of international seaport management. Not only does the Kaohsiung Free Trade Port Area increase the amount of being exported from Kaohsiung City, but it also invokes the development of related industries in the southern region of Taiwan. Kaohsiung Port will have the opportunity of expanding its international trading alliances which will consequently enhance business opportunities.
