The Vision of the KMRT System/高雄捷運的遠景
24 October 2001 marked one of the most important days in the history of Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit System. On this day, ground was finally broken on the KMRT system after 10 years of planning, with completion scheduled in 6 years. MRT system and underground sewerage are two leading indicators for the modernity of cities. While putting forth every effort in building the sewer system, the KCG has spent ten years planning the KMRT system and worked hard so that the project was finally able to kick off. The Taipei's MRT system has shown people in Taiwan that MRT system is convenient and comfortable and no longer something remote. What of the KMRT system when it's completed? It can be predicted that the air-conditioned KMRT will appeal to those who shun away from the scorching sun when waiting at bus stops and turn to their private vehicles. 9０年10月24日，對高雄市來說是相當重要的一天，籌備長達十年的高雄捷運，在這一天正式動工，預計在６年後完工，屆時高雄市民將可享受最新穎、舒適的捷運系統。評估一個都市的現代化程度，通常有兩個指標：一是地下下水道，另一則是捷運系統。在高雄市，市府也努力的朝這兩個目標邁進，不但加速鋪設汙水下水道，籌備十年的高雄捷運終於動工，讓高雄市成為名符其實的國際化大都市。
搭捷運，在台北捷運通車後，對台灣民眾不再如此陌生，但相同的捷運系統在高雄市究竟能發揮多大的功效？捷運除了快速、便捷的特性外，以往因為等候公車時太炎熱不願使用的高雄市民，在有空調設備的捷運啟用後，將會吸引許多市民，街道上的摩托車也會減少，讓高雄市以往為人詬病的空氣汙染大量降低，徹底改變高雄市的風貌。 更重要的是，高雄捷運規劃所連結的地區，廣及高雄縣與屏東縣，讓三縣市成為真正的「生活共同圈」。以往感覺遙遠的高高屏三縣市，經由快速、密集的捷運後，成為近在咫尺的一家人，高雄縣、屏東縣民假日要購物，可以輕鬆的使用捷運，到高雄市的商圈；高雄市民要到郊外踏青，也可到高雄縣、屏東縣，這種生活上的便利，更可讓高高屏的生活分工更清楚，發展許多衛星城市，讓高高屏在發展上更進步。 除了捷運外，許多其他的鐵路運輸工程同時也在開展，在捷運完工後將可發揮相輔相成的功能。這些工程包括了高鐵、台鐵鐵路地下化、高雄市區輕軌捷運，這將使得高雄捷運、台鐵構成高高屏的鐵路運輸系統，也將帶領高高屏進入全新的「鐵道世紀」，而這些鐵路系統，更聯結了高雄港及小港國際機場，使得高高屏成了高雄「雙港」的腹地，也將帶動高高屏的發展，向國際都會區邁進。 也因此，高雄捷運的開工，象徵著高雄市，乃至於高高屏在新世紀中，全新的出發，更是一個脫胎換骨的開始。
