KMRT Launched President Chen: A Great Stride/高雄捷運開工陳總統祝賀「高躍．雄飛」

The long-awaited construction of Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit (KMRT) system kicked off with the blessings of huge crowds on October 24. President Chen Sui-bian called it a great stride of Kaohsiung's development. He also cited the verses dedicated to the city by poet Yu Kuang-chung, "Let the torch of kapok blossoms be passed forward to the north at the speed of cross-country race," wishing the construction a great success. The ground-breaking ceremony for the R3 station of KMRT's Red Line was held at the intersection of Yenhai First Road and Hanmin Road, Hsiaokang District.

　Mayor Hsieh noted that another five sites would commence construction to usher in the era of KMRT. He said, despite a late start, KMRT had been strongly supported by President Chen and the central government. With the recently approved light-rail transit system, it will be able to accommodate the huge influx of passengers brought by the completion of Taiwan High Speed Railway and the expansion of offshore transshipment center.

　Mayor Hsieh said that KMRT will extend to Kaohsiung County, and the central government also supports the extension to Pingtung County, forecasting its connection to Pingtung's "second-generation export processing zone" and Kaohsiung County's Luchu Science Park. Together with Software Park, Logistics Center, and the export processing zone in offshore transshipment center, Kaohsiung's major development projects will be finished in the next 3~5 years. However, he urged citizens to wait patiently during the "dark age of traffic" for the bright future ahead.

　　見證夢想，預約未來！高雄市民引頸企盼的高雄捷運興建工程，10月24日在眾人的祝福下正式開工。陳水扁總統以「高躍．雄飛」、「蓄勢待發」恭喜高雄市，他並引用詩人余光中寫給高雄的美麗詩句─「讓木棉花的火把，用越野賽跑的速度，一路向北方傳達」，與全體市民共同期待高雄捷運順利、成功。

　　高雄都會區大眾捷運系統紅橘線路網建設案R3車站開工典禮，24日在高雄市小港區沿海一路與漢民路交叉路口舉行，陳水扁總統應市府之邀南下觀禮，謝長廷市長、市議會議長黃啟川、總統府陳哲男副秘書長、高雄縣長余政憲、交通部次長林陵三、中鋼董事長郭炎土、高雄捷運公司董事長陳振榮、市府各局處首長等中央及高高屏地區數百位政商人士、市民均到場觀禮，場面盛大、熱鬧。

　　謝市長致詞表示，高雄捷運R3車站開工後，將陸續有5個工地同時開工，代表高雄捷運時代即將來臨。

　　他指出，高雄捷運早在民國79年開始規劃，雖起步較晚，然而在陳總統及中央大力協助下，最近再核定輕軌系統的配套計畫，未來將可迎接高鐵完工後從各地來的大量旅客，以及境外轉運中心擴大後來自各地的交通運量。

　　謝市長說，高雄捷運將延長到高雄縣，中央也支持延伸到屏東縣，屆時整個南台灣將以捷運串連甫動工的屏東「二代加工出口區」及高雄縣「路科」，配合本市目前正在動工的軟體科技園區、已完成第一期工程的物流中心以及納入境外轉運中心的加工出口區，預估再過3到5年，高雄的重大建設將陸續完成，屆時南台灣將呈現新風貌。不過，再甜美的果實在成熟之前都是苦澀的，因此他希望市民在捷運興建期間，能共體時艱，渡過交通黑暗期，迎接未來燦爛光明的美景。
