Mariko Otsuki hails from Japan and was relocated by her company to Kaohsiung in December 2008. Back in Japan Mariko worked longer hours. She would often sacrifice her personal life for her professional life. However, in Taiwan, she has been enjoying more leisure time after work. Mariko stated it is something she is enjoying getting used to.

Mariko Otsuki speaks perfect English and Spanish, however before she came to Kaohsiung she spoke no Chinese. To hear her, it is hard to believe Mariko is new to the Chinese language and has become quite fluent. One of the reasons for this is the one-to-one Chinese tutoring that she attends six days a week. She feels it is important to learn the language in order to make friends with local people and blend into the local lifestyle. Mariko, doesn't want to be limited in her communication with the local people who cannot express themselves in English or Japanese. She wants to be able to completely understand her new friends.

Mariko is always energetic and cheerful and hopes to truly assimilate into the local culture. She also enjoys Kaohsiung's local cuisine. She finds Taiwanese gourmet "delicious and affordable". Mariko came to love Pigs Blood when she first tried Spicy Hot pot, at the welcoming party her new colleagues had organized for her. She also enjoys the variety of fruits available in Taiwan. This summer, she looks forward to trying mango shaved ice made with Taiwanese mangoes.

An avid cyclist in Japan, Mariko also enjoys cycling around Kaohsiung. She particularly enjoyed cycling around Lotus Pond in Zuoying and found the scenery to be exceptional. She has also bought a key chain with a map of Taiwan and plans to visit other beautiful cities around Taiwan in the future.

Fr. Charles Welsh, S. J. from the U.S., speaks fluent Chinese and has stayed in Taiwan for nearly 43 years. He started to promote Neuro Linguistic Programming about 30 years ago and is now a Chief Lecturer at Xavier Cultural Center.

Fr. Welsh recalled how he stepped into the consulting field. He was once assigned to the Lifeline and the Catholic Socia L Services in Hsinchu and stayed for 18 years in total. Later he went to the Graduate School of Psychology at National Taiwan University for further study. He became familiar with different schools and techniques, such as Satir, NLP and hypnotism. Afterwards, he devoted himself to helping people resolve their trouble and anxiety in order to have a happier and more confident life. Currently, Fr. Welsh not only teaches and works as a consultant, but also is responsible for administrative matters at his church.

When Fr. Welsh gets free time out of his busy schedule, he likes to watch movies at the Kaohsiung Film Archive or the second-run movie theaters, or takes a walk. The advantage of living in Kaohsiung, he said, is that there are many places for people to relax and enjoy beautiful scenery. Cijin Island, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, and the Cultural Center are among Fr. Welsh's favorite places. He particularly likes Sizihwan Beach. Therefore, whenever he has foreign visitors, he always takes them to see the beautiful and unique scenery around the beach.

Although Fr. Welsh moved to Kaohsiung only six years ago, he visited several times before. He said that Kaohsiung has undergone tremendous changes and indeed shows its potential. Since the MRT system is in operation, traveling in Kaohsiung has become very convenient, with bus and taxi availability as well. He also can't wait to try the newly-launched public bike rental system. Soon in the future, maybe you will see him on the bike trail!
