The 2003 Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival, beginning on December 12th, will take place at Ocean Star. At the first festival in 2001, cargo containers, the harbor, art, and leisure were well integrated. It made Kaosiung City more visible in the international arena.
This is the second time that the Bureau of Cultural Affairs is organizing the Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival. Cargo containers are very much a part of this city, combining characteristics both cultural and industrial. Here, the role of the cargo container undergoes a transformation; it becomes a vehicle for cultural exchange.
The red cargo containers set up on Singuang Road in 2001 are still fresh in the memories of many, and have been an important landmark since then. Continuing along the same lines, this year's festival will be even grander. There will be three types of art featured: performing arts, visual arts, and civil arts.
In terms of the performing arts, many famous performing groups, both domestic and international, have been invited. On weekends, there will also be street performers. This festival will extend through the end of 2003 into 2004, and the series of events planned, including the Cargo Containers Parade, Christmas party, and New Year's Eve party, are sure to delight visitors.
The visual arts will be even more fascinating. There are 12 countries and 92 artists participating in this exhibition, with 27 works of art and over 40 cargo containers on display. The theme for this exhibition is "The Container Art Village." This will be very different from the last exposition; cargo containers will not be presented individually, but will be grouped into villages. The variety of visual presentation and individual characteristics of these cargo container villages will create a colorful atmosphere.
The third section is the civil arts. This extends into the academic sphere, brings art into communities, and invites everyone to participate in the creation and development of civil art works. There is a container devoted to the exhibition of cultural objects in The Museum of History, which contributes to a better understanding of shipping transport, and the evolution of Kaohsiung Harbor. Meanwhile, each of 7 counties in southern Taiwan will be invited to create its own cargo container, as a presentation of its distinctive qualities. These containers will be a great addition to the colorful array of cargo containers on display at the festival.
In addition to the Cargo Town, the Cargo Marketplace and the Cargo Library show other facets of the city. The Chinese Taipei Film Archive, in conjunction with the 2003 World Human Rights Festival's "Cargo Cinema", will host an international film festival, showing domestic and foreign movies on the subject of human rights.
The Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival will run from December 12th, 2003, to January 11th, 2004. 「2003高雄國際貨櫃藝術節」於12月12日，在海洋之星登場！還記得2001年高雄市首次舉辦國際貨櫃藝術節，不僅將貨櫃、港口意象與藝術、休閒做了完美的結合，更成功地達到城市行銷的目的，將高雄推向國際藝術舞台。
由市府文化局主辦的「高雄國際貨櫃藝術節」，今年是第二次舉辦。「貨櫃」是高雄意象中，強烈而具特質的都市元素，「城市產業特質」結合「城市文化特色」，把原本承載「經濟物流」重任的貨櫃，化身為承載「藝術交流」使命的列車。
2001年在新光園路設立的紅色貨櫃裝置藝術，不但大家記憶猶新，更已成為高雄特色地景之一。延續這樣的概念，今年的貨櫃藝術節更加有看頭，整體活動分為表演藝術、視覺藝術與市民藝術三部份。
在「表演藝術」方面，此次同樣邀請國內外及高雄著名的表演藝術團隊參與演出，週休二日還有街頭藝人表演；由於活動期間跨越聖誕節與新年，因此在12月12日晚間開幕活動後，接著貨櫃彩繪遊行、聖誕晚會、跨年晚會......，一連串熱鬧豐富的大小活動接踵而來，讓大家有個豐富的跨年時光。
「視覺藝術」更是貨櫃藝術節的重頭戲。這次共有12國、92位藝術家、27件作品與40多只貨櫃參展，展覽主題為「貨櫃藝術村」，顧名思義，有別於上次以個別、單一貨櫃為創作主體，此次的展覽形式將以「村落」、「聚落」或「群組」的方式呈現。各單元傳達出一個城市「社區」的氛圍，這些不同樣貌、風格的藝術聚落，共同組合成為多元豐富的國際藝術城市。
第三部份則為「市民藝術」，延伸藝術創作與活動的空間和對象、擴展並深入藝術教育的層面，一則將貨櫃藝術帶入社區，二則邀請民眾參與創作、發展市民藝術。因此在歷史博物館有貨櫃文物展，帶領大家認識貨櫃運輸以及高雄港蛻變的歷程；同時更將邀請南部七縣市共同參與「貨櫃彩繪遊行」，針對地方文化特色自行彩繪，裝置成具有藝術風貌的貨櫃車，並與藝術團隊共同進行遊街活動。
還有「貨櫃造鎮」─「貨櫃藝術市集」、「貨櫃圖書館」等，展現另類的國際城市的風貌。為配合2003世界人權系列活動，貨櫃藝術節中更將設置「貨櫃影城」，與國家電影資料館合辦國際人權影展，播映國、內外人權主題電影。
除了各項國際級的藝術展演活動，貨櫃藝術節還有各種趣味比賽，整個藝術節活動從今年12月12日起，持續熱鬧進行到明年1月11日，整整一個月的活動，就在海洋之星（高雄市苓雅區，新光路與成功路口）等著大家一起來參加！
