◎Text and Photo by Jian Jhang

People often associate Wassana Chen's big eyes, wavy locks, and friendliness with sunny southern scenery. The diversity of traditional dishes this Thai restaurant offers, further demonstrates Wassana's passion for introducing authentic cuisines from her hometown.

Born and raised in mid-Thailand, Wassana met her husband at a local company which conducted foreign trade. She later moved to Taiwan after 4 years of marriage. Weather and lifestyle in Kaohsiung were quite similar to that of Thailand, so she had little problem fitting in. The only thing she missed was the traditional dishes from her home region. Her husband took her to several Thai restaurants, but she felt the food was more like a mix of Vietnamese and Burmese styles. Having gained experience through her family running a food business, Wassana began to think about opening her own bistro. Wassana worked at the Thailand Trade and Economic Office as a nine-to-fiver in her first two years in Kaohsiung, where she picked up the language quickly. Her aspiration for opening a bistro has never faded.

Motivated by her enthusiasm for cooking, Wassana later obtained a cuisine certificate and became eligible to work in the food industry. In 2001, Wassana finally opened a restaurant on Fusin Road near the City Government and has built a solid customer base over the years.opening a bistro has never faded. Wassana describes herself as a simple person. The place she visits the most in Kaohsiung is Shoushan Mountain, where she can embrace nature. Mountains and trees make her relax while crowded city streets give her a headache. She enjoys talking about Thai food with customers from different places and shares her zeal for cooking with them. Thai cuisines are not new to her customers, no matter if they are local or from abroad - Japan or Canada. The Thai bistro allows Wassana to carve out her own future and comforts her nostalgia for her hometown.
