Countries in the West have been carrying out art restoration techniques for centuries; however Taiwan is only at the beginning of carrying out this process. Chengshiu University Art centre is located near Chengcing Lake. To capitalize on its polytechnic academic background, it has established the Art- Technological Conservation and Restoration Section (ATCRS). The centre invited Dr. Ioseba Imanol Soraluze Herrera from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Universidad Politecnica de Valencia) in Spain to take charge of restoring the masterpieces of Taiwanese fine art. ATCRS is the only professional team of fine art restoration located in Kaohsiung.

Dr. Herrera decided to major in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage during his undergraduate and PhD degrees. He has now been residing in Taiwan for two years and has been commissioned to restore nearly a hundred pieces of artwork. His clients include Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Art, various Taiwanese artists and art collectors.

Dr. Ioseba feels the most important thing the team must consider when accepting an assignment, is treating the artwork with respect. This includes avoiding direct contact with the piece. In order to undertake the restoration of a painting, the team must carry out substantial research on the piece and interviews with the client. They then go through numerous procedures including photographing, sample testing, chromatograph (which often includes the use of a microscope), supporting and protecting the surface and back of the painting, mounting, cleaning and patching. It usually takes over a month to complete an assignment.

Apart from his professional life, Dr. Ioseba also enjoys a number of activities in his personal life. Although he is not a Buddhist, he likes to visit Foguangshan for its unique cultural atmosphere. During the weekends, he enjoys meeting friends for meals or shopping. Sun Yat-Sen University and Love River are also places he enjoys spending time. He especially likes the Kaohsiung Film Archive, where he has enjoyed some good films. Dr. Ioseba says, Kaohsiung is a relaxing coastal city and is a very comfortable place to live. He is really enjoying his work and leisure time in this city.

Dahlia's exploration of Kaohsiung

Ms. Ross Diana Dahlia Marpaung Dugast (Dahlia) moved to Kaohsiung with her husband, Mr. Jacques Dugast, in 2006 after Jacques took a job in the city. Dahlia was born and raised in Indonesia therefore she is familiar with Asian culture. Even though some find it tough to cope with the hot weather, she has adapted quite well. She has started to learn how to swim. As for the food, she likes sushi, seafood, and spicy hotpot. Besides Indonesian as her mother tongue, Dahlia speaks fluent English and French. However, she does not speak Mandarin. She often communicates in English with others around Kaohsiung. The language barrier has not hampered her from exploring the city. She takes taxis and buses and is planning to take the Kaohsiung MRT as well.

Dahlia and Jacques decided to live nearby Love River mainly because of the beauty of the river and all kinds of activities and events taking place near the river. Dahlia holds a particular fascination of fireworks that are displayed on the Love River while some important events are held there. During Dragon Boat Festival in June, Dahlia watched the dragon boat races. When she learned that she could form a team to participate in the dragon boat competition, she was quite excited. She would have really loved to participate if she and her potential teammates had time to practice.

Over the past two years, Dahlia has made many friends by joining clubs and also works as a volunteer for some local charities. Her participation is rewarded with bonded friendships and a more purpose-filled life.

Jacques admires the friendliness of the local residents. For instance, when people notice that this couple might have difficulty ordering from a menu which only has Mandarin, people immediately offer assistance in any way they can. The kindness of residents has formed a wonderful impression on him. As for the transformation of the city, Jacques has noticed that the city government provides more parks for the residents. He is surprised that with the hot weather in Kaohsiung, the city is able to manage to take good care of the colossal amount of flowers displayed all over the city. He likes to visit the harbor area in his free time. Jacques is impressed that the city is able to complete new construction within a short period of time. He is looking forward to the new economic policies ; he hopes that these policies will stimulate the economy and eventually offer more jobs. Thus, many would move to Kaohsiung and get to know this charming city.

Dahlia
