Kaohsiung City, with its charming Love River and the newly reopened Kaohsiung Port, has made the wharf its best tourist attraction. The whole world is ready to experience the beauty of this ocean capital through all kinds of cultural activities. As the host of the World Games 2009, Kaohsiung is transforming itself into an international city.
Sustained Development：Energetic Kaohsiung
To mark the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Kaohsiung, a succession of activities has been held in the city. On December 18th, 2004, 11,551 people participated in the activity, "ten thousand people piping the ceramic flute", which successfully established a Guinness World Record.
Others, like "New Year in Kaohsiung", "the Kaohsiung Latern Festival", "the Sailing Boats", "the Hakka Popular Music Contest", "The Newsstand & Book Vendor", "Kaohsiung Mobile Exhibition Hall " and "Earth From Above Aerial Photography" have all been highly welcomed. Moreover, the energetic promotion of such innovative activities endorses the city government's own supreme effort to promote Kaohsiung onto the international world stage.
The new face of Kaohsiung
Kaohsiung, the city with aesthetic taste, has obviously improved its cityscape and dazzled the people from other places with its beauty. "Urban Spotlight", "Golden River Cafe", "River Mambo Cafe", "Fisherman's Wharf", "Cape Cafe", "No.1 Pier Restaurant" and "the British Consulate at Takao" are some of the best examples of the achievements attained through the co-operation between private enterprises in the reuse of city space. In the future, the build operation transfer (BOT) strategy will also be applied to build the Kaohsiung Dome and the NanZih sewerage system. Such energetic creativity displayed by private companies, has succeeded in beautifying the cityscape.
Cyber City
Kaohsiung City, the first "Cyber City" in the world, applies the wireless network to the government's information system, combining multiple information platforms such as the Transportation, Police, Fire, Public Work Bureau, as well as the Information Office. Resources will thus be used more efficiently, therefore providing Kaohsiung's citizens with more reliable and convenient information and services in daily life. By using the "smart" system in the buses and at bus stops, the routes of the 448 buses in Kaohsiung City will be monitored by Global Positioning System (GPS). The citizens will be able to know the location and the arrival time of the buses by just making a phone call.
The World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung
Mayor Hsieh said that Kaohsiung City has successfully won the bid to host the World Games 2009. Although there are still five years left to prepare for this event, the city government has already placed the focus on the construction of software and hardware. Next year, representatives from Kaohsiung City will go to Germany to accept the World Games Flag. During the official ceremony, Kaohsiung representatives will be able to give an eight minutes presentation of their city. This will be the moment to launch Taiwan in general and Kaohsiung City in particular onto the world stage and will be a time to feel proud of receiving such an honor.
The goal of Kaohsiung City's policy in the year 2005 is to build a "Healthy City," encouraging its citizens to have a healthy physical condition as well as a healthy mind, ready to accept the coming of the 2009 World Games.
現在的高雄，有一條美麗的愛河；開放後的高雄港口已成為歡樂的觀光碼頭；各種充滿港都風采的文化活動開始向全世界招手，並爭取到「2009世界運動會」主辦權，高雄市正朝國際城市的目標大步邁進。
永續經營活力高雄
建市八十週年的高雄，展現蓬勃的活力，各式各樣的城市運動陸續展開，93年12月18日辦理的「台灣陶笛．萬人吹奏」，以11,551人的總人數，成功締造新的金氏世界紀錄。從「高雄過好年」、「元宵燈會」、「水上帆船運動」、「客家流行歌曲創作比賽」、「空中看地球」、「2004高雄國際電影節」等系列叫好叫座的活動，到「文化書報亭」的開張和「高雄行動館」的前進校園等，在在顯示市政建設永續經營推動的創新與活力。
高雄展新貌
高雄市注入城市美學之後，城市景觀明顯的改變，高雄變得越來越美，讓外地來的訪客驚豔不已，從「城市光廊」、「黃金愛河」、「河邊曼波」、「漁人碼頭」「好望角」、「一號船渠」到「前清英國領事館」，都是結合民間力量讓空間活化最佳的例子，未來將興建的巨蛋體育館、楠梓污水下水道系統也是透過BOT的方式，藉由民間豐沛的創意與活力，讓高雄市的市容建設宛如蛻變的鳳凰，展現全新風貌。
打造行動寬頻城市
高雄市已經成為全世界第一個以「市政公務」為主軸將無線網路應用在政府資訊系統的「行動寬頻城市」，結合警政、交通、消防、新聞、工務等五個局處，使資源更加有效利用和管理，提供市民更安全、便捷的生活資訊及服務。透過交通局研發的smart公車與站牌，將高雄市448輛公車的行蹤在GPS全球定位系統的監控下，民眾只要一通電話就可以知道公車的位置及預估到站的時間。
2009世運在高雄
謝市長指出，高雄市成功爭取到二○○九世界運動會主辦權，雖然距今還有五年時間，但市府此刻已開始全面投入各項軟硬體規劃與建設，2005年高雄市將前往德國參加2005年世運會，並迎接世運會會旗，在開幕典禮中高雄市有八分鐘展演時間，將是台灣與高雄站上世界舞台的關鍵時刻，也是高雄市的驕傲與光榮。2005年，高雄市以「健康城市」做為施政總目標，市民擁有健康體能、健康心靈，創造健康環境，達成健康城市為建設主軸，迎接二○○九世運會的到來。
