Poland is my home country. Inowroclaw is my hometown. My name is Adam and I am 25. I love football, especially clubs such as Celtic and Valencia. I could not imagine my life without hard rock music; it gives me loads of positive energy. My dream is to become a reporter.
I have stayed in Kaohsiung longer than the usual tourist, but far shorter than some of my friends who have lived here for ten or fifteen years. During these past eleven months, I regularly visited the Kaohsiung Film Archive. It is without a doubt one of my favourite places around the whole city.
I arrived in Taiwan in August 2006 to take part in an internship project supported by the local government. As a trainee in the Information Office, I worked at the archive once a week; and since my first day I knew it was an extraordinary chance for me. I am truly passionate about the cinema. I could not think of a better place to be.
My job at the archive was reviewing the films. It was a pleasure and a challenge since English is not my native language. Every Monday I could choose from several hundred titles. I adore movies of the 50s, 60s, and the 70s and was delighted when I discovered a great variety of masterpieces gathered in the archive.
I go to movie theatres fairly often, but modern cinema does not compare to the classics for me. The archive was the place where I could watch all my idols: Gregory Peck as a demonic Captain Ahab in "Moby Dick" (1956), John Wayne and William Holden in a western "The Horse Soldiers" (1959), Humphrey Bogart and his unique performance in a cult noir feature "The Maltese Falcon" (1941). Each visit to the Archive was like entering a new imaginary world.
If you appreciate quality, but not necessarily the latest movies, I honestly advise a visit to the Archive. You will not be disappointed.
