Put up the sail and enjoy the ocean breeze under the golden sun - really, is there any better way than sailing to get this close to the deep blue sea?
Kaohsiung has an array of unique natural outlets including rivers, port, and precious marine resources. Not only is the scenery spectacular, but there are also plenty of places under development for people to enjoy during their leisure time. Over the last few years, the Kaohsiung City Government has been working hard to make the port and ocean more accessible by opening up a range of areas for boating. With this concept in mind, the Kaohsiung City Marine Bureau has organised a series of Ketch activities. Open to anyone with an interest in sailing, the "Sail Boating Camp" was open to public in near future. These activities not only showed the diversity to which the ocean of Kaohsiung could be used, but also provided youngsters with an alternative activity to racing scooters or other potentially destructive behaviour. This is definitely a step in the right direction towards developing a healthier culture towards sports and health in general in Kaohsiung.
Air pollution is minimised in Ketch activities as the motor on the sailing boat is only used when leaving and returning to the wharf. Furthermore, without engine noise or the toxic smell of petrol, sailing is extremely environmentally friendly. With the calm lapping of the waves against the hull of the boat, sailing is great way to get up close with nature. Not only is the view spectacular from the boat, but the boats on the ocean provide a great view for those looking out to the sea from the land. With such a beautiful ocean at its doorstep, Kaohsiung provides the perfect location for sailing.
With the highly respected experience of sailing around the world behind him, Captain Ning-Sheng Liu warned that although the boats avoid using motive power, people can still suffer from seasickness when the waves are rough. However, the possibility of seasickness can be reduced by ensuring you get a good night's sleep the night before setting out to sail, by not eating oily food, by keeping relaxed whilst on board, and by focusing on the horizon - then you're likely to have a wonderful sailing trip.
The Kaohsiung City Marine Bureau will borrow the sailing boats from a number of professional sailors. The two-hour "Keel Boating Camp" will starte from Dock No. 1 at Hamasen and ended at Sizih Bay. There will also be two rescue boats on stand by for emergency reasons during the course of the activity. Each participant will be presented with a sailing certificate at the completion of the event. The Director-General of the Kaohsiung City Marine Bureau, Zong-Ting Ko, said that the Marine Bureau hopes that this sport will become more popular in order to show Kaohsiung City's special "Marine Culture".
