The UN Climate Change Conference will be held in November this year in Morocco, North Africa. Students of Chung Chuang Junior High School, Kaohsiung City were invited to a commitment signing activity to make congratulatory cards for the conference. In expectation of Kaohsiung City’s hosting of EcoMobility World Festival next year, some cards will be made jointly by students of Gushan Elementary School, which is located at the core area of the festival. Moreover, representatives from the Education Bureau, Transportation Bureau, and Chung Chuang Junior High School signed a letter of commitment to protect the Earth while on the Chung Chuang Junior High School campus at 9:00 a.m. today (October 18). About 1,000 teachers and students surrounded the venue of the ceremony, which was unveiled with an electric vehicle that embodies eco-mobility. During the activity, teachers and students of Chung Chuang Junior High School showed their creativity and wit by displaying a big wok with the “earth” inside. Six pieces of wood were put underneath the wok, each representing a cause of global warming. Puffs of smoke emitted from the wok, symbolizing the “earth” having a fever, so that participants may feel the warming of the “earth”. In the end, 12 student representatives announced their commitment to protecting the earth. They also took out the wood from the bottom of the wok to symbolize minimizing the harm of global warming. Furthermore, they collected the cards and collaged them to make 12 big posters. According to Mr. Huang Huo-yan, Principal of Chung Chuang Junior High School, the school’s teachers and students made nearly 1,000 cards altogether, with commitments to protecting the earth written on each of them. These cards will be sent to the UN Office at Geneva (the European Headquarters of UN) in a few days, and will be displayed in the Climate Change Conference held in Morocco, Africa. The Transportation Bureau stated that teachers and students of Chung Chuang Junior High School and Gushan Elementary School would represent Taiwan in expressing our concerns about global warming to the world by participating in the card making activity for this annual international event. Since the EcoMobility World Festival will be held in Kaohsiung City next year, the city government will organize a series of warm-up activities around the theme of energy conservation, carbon reduction, and environmental sustainability. It is hoped that teachers and students may join in the activities and that their awareness of the global warming issue would be raised. The Transportation Bureau would also like to encourage students to develop the habits of using green transportation tools (e.g., walking, riding bicycle, traveling by forms of public transportation like buses and the MRT) from a young age, so as to put the idea of protecting the earth into practice in their daily lives!
